MEXICO: Car bomb, magnicide — but the pattern holds

The killing of a gubernatorial candidate in late June and the detonation of what appeared to be a car bomb in Ciudad Juárez in mid-July led many analysts, pundits and headline writers to proclaim that drug-related violence in Mexico was entering a new phase, with terrorist bombings and assassinations of public figures among its prominent features. The drug cartels, many said, were “taking on" the political establishment. A closer look at these developments suggests that there has been no great departure from the pattern of the last few years.
