In brief: Mexico registers renewed job losses in December
* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has reported that some 277,000 formal jobs were lost in the country in December 2020, a disappointing performance following several months of recovery from the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on employment in Mexico. While the country’s social security institute (IMSS) has not yet officially released the figures for December, López Obrador confirmed that job losses soared once again, attributing this to “outsourcing”, citing a practice (which his government is seeking to prohibit) through which companies are able to lay off workers who had been sub-contracted from third parties. The IMSS registered the loss of around 1.1m formal jobs in Mexico between March and June 2020, but there had subsequently been cause for optimism, with around 600,000 jobs recovered by November 2020. López Obrador insisted that the renewed job losses in December were merely a seasonal blip, and claimed that by March, employment in Mexico will have returned to pre-pandemic levels.
