Fresh protests break out in Peru over agrarian reform

Three people died, including a minor, when agricultural workers clashed with police during protests on 30 December. Just the day before Peru’s congress pushed through a contentious agrarian reform, which protesters argued did not go nearly far enough. The latest fatalities follow two deaths a month earlier when protests erupted in the north and south of the country as agricultural workers demanded higher salaries, improved labour conditions, and the annulment of the “exploitative” agro-export promotion law. The risk of further fatalities in fresh protests is very real.
