BOLIVIA: Coca eradication still a point of contention

In December, Bolivia’s interior minister Eduardo del Castillo unveiled the new administration’s five-year plan to tackle the illicit trafficking and production of drugs. Its main focus was on coca – of which Bolivia is the third-largest producer in the world (behind neighbours Colombia and Peru, although Bolivia comfortably surpasses these on a per capita basis), and the politically-charged question of how to tackle the illegal production of cocaine while coca-growing remains partially legal.
