HONDURAS: New contenders, familiar problems

On 3 December Honduras’s electoral commission (CNE) received registration details for parties taking part in pre-presidential primaries scheduled for 14 March, ahead of the November 2021 general election. At least three of the leading contenders - congress president Mauricio Oliva and Tegucigalpa mayor Nasry “Tito” Asfura, of the ruling Partido Nacional (PN), and Yani Rosenthal, a former minister of the presidency (2006-2007), congressperson (2010-2014), and presidential precandidate (2012) for the traditional opposition Partido Liberal (PL) - either face corruption allegations or have been convicted. This has once again fanned concerns about the calibre of candidates ahead of the presidential vote.
