US continues to recognise Guaidó as Venezuela’s leader

Venezuela: On 5 January US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo issued a statement saying that the US continues to recognise Juan Guaidó as the legitimate president of Venezuela. According to the statement, on 6 December the “illegitimate [Nicolás] Maduro regime staged fraudulent legislative elections in Venezuela. Sixty countries around the world either came together to issue joint statements, including those released by the European Union, the Organization of American States, the Lima Group, and the International Contact Group, or issued their own statement, rejecting the sham elections”. It adds that “We consider this group to be illegitimate and will not recognise it nor its pronouncements”, adding that Guaidó and Venezuela’s national assembly elected in 2015 are “the only democratic representatives of the Venezuelan people as recognised by the international community, and they should be freed from Maduro’s harassment, threats, persecution, and other abuses”.
