Marcelo Gonzales, the newly-appointed president of Bolivia’s state-owned lithium company Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB), has confirmed that commencing the industrialisation of lithium will be YLB’s main priority under the government led by President
Luis Arce. Gonzales claimed that Bolivia is “
ready to enter the lithium industrialisation stage”, confirming that work will soon begin on two lithium carbonate plants – at the Coipasa salt flat in Oruro department, and the Pastos Grandes volcanic caldera in Potosí department. He voiced optimism that by moving beyond just the extraction of lithium and into its industrialisation, Bolivia will be able to draw on this resource to help reactivate the economy in the wake of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, providing revenue for public spending, as well as “
countless sources of employment”.
