* Brazil’s environment ministry (MMA) has completed an auction for the concession of two national parks, the Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral parks situated between the southern states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The auction was closed with an initial bid of R$20.5m (US$3.73m), 2,700% higher than the minimum bid of R$718,000, and the concessions were awarded to Construcap, an industrial services group which already holds the concession for the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo city. This is the first such auction to take place under the MMA’s new model of concessions, which are part of the government’s investment partnerships programme (PPI), and should generate R$260m in investments over 30 years, according to the MMA. The ministry notes that Construcap
“will be responsible for the revitalisation, modernisation, operation, maintenance, and management of the parks and will offer services to tourists”. Responsibility for biodiversity conservation will remain with the national conservation agency (ICMBio).
