Brazil’s Bolsonaro cements pro-Trump position

After the storming of the US Capitol by radical supporters of President Donald Trump on 6 January, interrupting the congressional vote to certify Joe Biden’s victory, leaders the world over spoke out to condemn the events and defend democracy. Not so Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, whose admiration for, and similarities with Trump earned him the ‘Trump of the Tropics’ moniker after his 2018 election. “You know I’m aligned with Trump,” he told supporters on 6 January, repeating the baseless allegations of fraud in the US election. He reiterated these claims the following day, adding that Brazil will face the same problems in the 2022 general election if it retains its electronic voting system.
