In brief: Brazil’s retail trade remains stable in November 2020

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for the retail trade sector, which saw a slight dip in sales of -0.1% in November 2020 compared with October. This breaks the cycle of six consecutive positive monthly results - the retail sector’s performance plunged in March-April as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, but began to recover from May onwards. In year-on-year terms, retail sales grew by 3.4% in November, and accumulated a positive result of 1.2% in the 11 months to November 2020. A drop in sales in the hypermarkets, supermarkets, food & drink category is understood to have driven the dip in retail sales in November, a reflection of accelerating inflation in that category.
