In brief: Brazil’s retail businesses gloomy over the future

* The Confederação Nacional de Bens, Servicos, e Turismo (CNC), Brazil’s tourism and commerce industry association, has released the January issue of its retail businesses confidence Index (Icec), which shows that confidence amongst retailers is dipping. The January Icec stood at 105.8 points, 2.2% below the December 2020 Icec, continuing a negative trend begun last month. Perceptions of retailers’ current conditions (for the economy, the sector, and their business) were down 5.8% compared with December, while expectations in these three categories were down 2.3%. The president of the CNC, José Roberto Tadros, noted that retail always sees a dip in January following the Christmas period, but that the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, with uncertainty over vaccination and the state of the economy, continue to negatively affect businesses and their outlook for the future.
