In brief: New figures show pandemic impact on Argentina’s deficit

* Argentina has closed 2020 with a primary fiscal deficit of Ar$1.75trn (US$20.3bn), equivalent to 6.5% of GDP and a financial deficit of Ar$2.29trn (8.5% of GDP) according to new economy ministry figures. According to the ministry the deficit reflects measures taken by the government to address the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, which include “spending to help families, employment, production and the sustainability of provincial administrations”.
