GUATEMALA: Giammattei’s one year balance sheet raises eyebrows

President Alejandro Giammattei has presented a state-of-the-nation address after completing his first year in office, a period largely overshadowed by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. He highlighted as key achievements efforts to combat malnutrition - a declared priority upon taking office as Guatemala has one of the worst malnutrition rates in the region, with 46.5% of children under five chronically malnourished. He also flagged up a “historic drop in homicides”. However, these professed achievements have been called into question, along with his omission of other key issues.
