Cienfuegos case rocks Mexico-US relations as Biden takes office

One of the first actions of US President Joe Biden upon taking office on 20 January was to issue an executive order halting construction of the Mexican border wall. This should have been cause for celebration in Mexico and indeed it was hailed as a positive step by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who also praised Biden’s commitment to immigration reform. But just days earlier Ebrard took a decision that could do untold damage to bilateral security cooperation and complicate relations with the Biden administration from the outset.
