PARAGUAY |
A good year for beef. On 4 January, Paraguay’s national service for livestock health and quality (Senacsa) informed that beef exports reached a new record in 2020, totalling 271,000 tonnes (t). This is the first year that Paraguay has seen record beef exports since 2014, and the positive figures come despite the challenges caused by the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The value of beef exports totalled US$1.12bn, slightly under the 2014 figure. Chile was the primary destination for Paraguayan beef, representing almost 40% of total exports. It was followed by Russia (22%), Taiwan (9%), Brazil (8%), and Israel (6.5%). The government led by President Mario Abdo Benítez is working to open up more markets to Paraguayan beef and has informed that it will be re-launching discussions with Turkey on the matter this year. The Abdo Benítez government also expects to see advances in its efforts to access the US market in the first half of 2021.
