In brief: Bolivia records reduced annual trade deficit

* Bolivia’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the country’s foreign trade figures for 2020, according to which annual imports totalled US$7.015bn, and annual exports totalled US$7.08bn, leaving a trade deficit of US$65m. Gary Rodríguez, the president of national private sector lobby Instituto Boliviano de Comercio Exterior (Ibce), noted that this represents Bolivia’s sixth consecutive annual trade deficit, but highlighted that this year’s figure was down 92% on the US$860m deficit recorded in 2019. Last year saw substantial declines in both imports and exports as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, falling by US$2.7bn (down 28%) and US$1.9bn (down 21%) respectively.
