Introduction

The 2021 election calendar for Latin America opens on 7 February with presidential and legislative elections in Ecuador where the ruling Alianza País (AP) is likely to be punished for the failings of President Lenín Moreno’s outgoing administration. Despite a record 16 candidates for the presidency, there are two main contenders: 35-year-old economist Andrés Arauz (who has been endorsed by his mentor, left-wing former president Rafael Correa) and 66-year-old businessman (and two-time runner-up) Guillermo Lasso.
