ECUADOR: Future of IMF deal in doubt

The electoral backdrop was inescapable when President Lenín Moreno met the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, at Ecuador’s embassy in Washington on 26 January to discuss the US$6.5bn programme agreed by his government in 2020. The two frontrunners ahead of the presidential elections on 7 February, Andrés Arauz, an acolyte of former left-wing president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), and Guillermo Lasso, the candidate of the right-of-centre Movimiento Creo and conservative Partido Social Cristiano (PSC), are diametrically opposed in nearly all respects but they have one thing in common: neither of them intends to stick with the IMF deal.
