COLOMBIA: Pressure for peace continues to mount

Last week’s speech to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by Carlos Ruiz Massieu, the UN special representative in Colombia, struck something of a familiar note. Not for the first time, his quarterly report emphasised the threat of escalating violence in Colombia, and the importance of the proper implementation of the country’s momentous 2016 peace agreement. And yet, these words appeared to take on new significance in light of the events of the previous day: the inauguration of US President Joe Biden, who looks set to take a diametrically opposite stance to his predecessor on the subject of Colombia’s peace deal.
