MEXICO: Covid debate rages as López Obrador tests positive

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador dropped a bombshell on Twitter on 24 January by announcing that he had tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19). López Obrador’s supporters flooded him with well wishes, and even inveterate rivals set aside their political differences to extend their hope that he makes a swift recovery. But López Obrador also came under fire for the insouciance that has characterised his response to the pandemic from the outset, setting a poor example by eschewing face masks and acting as if he possessed an innate immunity to the virus: Mexico has seen an explosion of cases and fatalities in recent weeks. The internal contradictions that have bedevilled his government’s Covid-messaging were manifest again this week in the approach to acquiring vaccines.
