In brief: Mexico registers record trade surplus

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released the latest figures on Mexico’s trade balance which show that the country posted a US$34.48bn trade surplus in 2020, compared with US$5.4bn in 2019. According to the Inegi figures, total exports amounted to US$417.67bn in 2020, down 9.3% on 2019 while imports totalled US$383.19bn, down 15.8% on 2019. Inegi president Julio Santaella tweeted that the “record” surplus reflects the “relative weakness of internal demand vs external demand” which in turn reflects the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
