In brief: Chile’s unemployment rate remains high but improves

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the latest figures for unemployment, which show the unemployment rate fell to 10.3% in the October-December 2020 rolling quarter. This continues the trend of improvement in the unemployment rate since the 13.1% record high in the rolling quarter ending in July 2020, but it is still 3.2 percentage points above the unemployment rate at the close of 2019. Unemployment is higher amongst women (10.9%) than men (9.8%). So-called ‘absent workers’ – which includes workers furloughed in the context of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic – represent 8% of the active workforce, around 111,452 people, a 20.9% increase on last year.
