In brief: Ecuador announces emergency unemployment subsidy

* Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno has announced that 570,000 families will receive an emergency subsidy worth US$500 by the end of March, to support those affected by growing unemployment in the wake of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Moreno noted that this subsidy will be payable to households with no-one in formal employment, but with members who had previously been affiliates of the country's social security institute (IESS). This measure will be financed using US$350m of the emergency credit received from multilateral organisations in 2020.
