ARGENTINA: Formosa rights situation becomes hot political issue

The ongoing allegations of the systematic violation of human rights by the provincial government in Argentina’s northern Formosa province is producing political ructions. Local and international human rights organisations, as well as the political opposition, have brought a legal case against the Formosa government and demanded that the Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronist) federal government intervene [WR-21-04]. But with the Fernández administration reluctant to move against the PJ provincial government in Formosa, the opposition and rights groups are calling for international bodies to step in. This being an electoral year in Argentina, the issue could fuel political tensions for weeks to come.
