POINTERS

ECUADOR | Coca growing spreads southward. On 9 November police intercepted a truck carrying 9,600 coca seedlings in San Lorenzo, in the northern border province of Esmeraldas. The vehicle is thought to have started its journey in Imbabura, in Ecuador's northern highlands. This haul is equivalent to about 13% of the coca bushes uprooted by eradication teams in 2009 (eradication, it must be noted, fell from 152,060 bushes in 2008 to 73,290 in 2009).
