In brief: Uncertainty over Costa Rica’s tourism sector

* Rodolfo Lizano, the director of planning and development for Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT), a government body, projects that between 400,000 and 1.6m tourists will visit Costa Rica during 2021. The figures are based on three predictive models used by the ICT. Speaking at an event attended by media and tourism sector representatives, Lizano said that the wide margin was based on the “enormous uncertainty which exists due to sanitary circumstances” which stem from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, “which should be reviewed every three months”. Last month the ICT published new figures which show that just 1.01m international tourists visited Costa Rica in 2020, a third of the more than 3m who visited the country in 2019.
