In brief: Mexico’s auto industry warns of semiconductor shortages

* Mexico's auto industry groups, the Asociación Mexicana de la Industria Automotriz (Amia) and Industria Nacional de Autopartes (Ina), have warned that global shortages of semiconductors will adversely affect vehicle production in Mexico for at least the first half of 2021. Ina president, Oscar Albín, reported that the supply of semiconductors, manufactured primarily in Taiwan and South Korea, has dried up in recent months. Albín claimed that these shortages were the primary cause of January’s 15% year-on-year decline in auto production in Mexico. The sector was hit hard in 2020 by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, but had shown signs of recovery towards the end of the year.
