In brief: DR launches tender process for 5G network

* The Dominican Republic’s (DR) President Luis Abinader has formally launched an international tender process to operate a nationwide '5G' telecommunications network, according to a presidential press release. In announcing the launch of the process, President Abinader highlighted the government’s objective that the DR become the second country in the region “to assign up to 100 continuous megahertz in medium bands, the amount of spectrum recommended to achieve the full potential of the 5G network”. Winning bidders will have to comply with the five-year plan to achieve minimum national coverage, which Abinader affirmed will “change the reality of the population [and] will make the nation more competitive, more dynamic, and better connected”. Julissa Cruz, the executive director of the DR’s telecommunications institute (Indotel), said that the deadline for companies to register their bids was May 2021, with the adjudication process to take place the same month, and the contract to be signed in September.
