In brief: Record fall in Mexico’s tourism income

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has published new figures which show that international tourist arrivals to the country fell by 46% to 24.3m in 2020 compared with 2019. This is the biggest fall in arrivals in five years, and resulted in a 55% drop in the sector’s income to US$9m, the biggest fall in income in 40 years. This drastic reduction in tourist arrivals has been wholly attributed to effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Mexico’s tourism minister, Miguel Torruco, noted that this is the tourism sector’s worst year “since World War II”, and warned that the sector’s recovery will very much depend on the lifting of global travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
