* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has published new figures which show that international tourist arrivals to the country fell by 46% to 24.3m in 2020 compared with 2019. This is the biggest fall in arrivals in five years, and resulted in a 55% drop in the sector’s income to US$9m, the biggest fall in income in 40 years. This drastic reduction in tourist arrivals has been wholly attributed to effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Mexico’s tourism minister,
Miguel Torruco, noted that this is the tourism sector’s worst year “
since World War II”, and warned that the sector’s recovery will very much depend on the lifting of global travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
