In brief: Brazil’s retail sector sees positive sales in 2020

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for Brazil’s retail sector, according to which sales plunged by 6.1% in December 2020 compared with November. This is the most marked fall in retail sales for the month of December since current records began in 2000. As well as the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, which led to a significant drop in sales in March and April 2020 before consumption picked up leading to unusually strong results in October and November, high food prices help explain the December result. Overall, retail sales grew by 1.2% over the course of 2020, the fourth consecutive year of gains.
