In brief: Argentina’s inflation remains persistently high

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the latest figures for the consumer price index (IPC), which show that monthly inflation totalled 4% in January – the same monthly figure as in December 2020. This brings annual inflation in January to 38.5%, up from 36.1% in December. These latest high figures drive home the need to implement policies that bring inflation under control, as President Alberto Fernández’s government advances efforts to keep prices from rising. The government hopes to bring inflation down to 29% by the end of the year, but this diverges significantly from other projections, with the median private sector-based estimate from the central bank (BCRA) standing at 49.4%.
