In brief: Nicaragua’s finance minister optimistic on growth

* Nicaragua’s finance minister, Iván Acosta, has said that he expects Nicaragua’s GDP to grow 2.5% in 2021 after three years of contractions. These stem firstly from the political crisis which began in April 2018 after the government began a crackdown on its opponents, who it accuses of attempting to carry out a coup, and then the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. According to the World Bank (WB), Nicaragua’s GDP contracted 4% in 2018, 3.9% in 2019, and 6.3% in 2020. The WB is less optimistic than Acosta, however, forecasting that Nicaragua’s GDP will grow 0.7% in 2021.
