In brief: Brazil’s Ceará state to produce 'green' hydrogen

* The state government of Ceará in the northeast of Brazil has announced the launch of a 'green' hydrogen hub at the Pecém port complex (CIPP). As part of the initiative, Ceará state authorities have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Federação de Indústrias do Estado do Ceará (Fiec) industry association, the Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), and the CIPP authorities; issued a decree setting up a working group involving representatives from all these institutions to strengthen the green hydrogen value chain in Ceará; and signed an MoU with Australian company Enegix Energy for the construction of a green hydrogen production plant at the CIPP, with a planned investment of US$5.4bn. “Everyone is moving towards the use of clean energy and Ceará is part of the avant-garde that is changing socioeconomic reality, as we have all the favourable conditions for producing and exporting green hydrogen”, Ceará state governor, Camilo Santana, said. Green hydrogen, which is made using clean electricity produced from renewables to electrolyse water, has been touted as the sustainable fuel of the future. The CEO of Enegix, Wesley Cooke, said that the green hydrogen plant project would generate thousands of jobs during the construction stage and hundreds once it is operational.
