Peace promoters warn of escalating violence
Colombia’s transitional justice system (JEP) caused a stir on 26 January when its human rights risk monitoring division warned that 2021 looked set to be “the most violent year since the signing of the peace agreement”. The 2016 pact between the government and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group was meant to help resolve Colombia’s long-running conflict, but ultimately provided only brief respite from the country’s human rights crisis, which has escalated substantially since President Iván Duque came to power in 2018.
