In brief: Argentina cuts electricity subsidies for big consumers

* Argentina’s energy secretariat has announced the end of subsidised electricity tariffs for so-called ‘big consumers’, that is to say entities consuming over 300 kilovolts per day. This means that some 2,900 establishments, including automobile factories and large retail spaces, are no longer eligible for subsidised electricity tariffs. The energy secretary, Dario Martínez, said that “we have taken this measure to remedy the inequities that caused distortions in the cost of electricity amongst companies of similar sizes and activities”, giving an unfair advantage to those which paid subsidised tariffs. Martínez has stressed that schools, hospitals, and public universities will continue to benefit from subsidised electricity tariffs.
