In brief: Argentina’s GDP preview reveals scale of contraction

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the latest figures for the monthly indicator of economic activity (Emae), a preview of GDP growth, which show Argentina’s economic activity fell 2.2% year-on-year in December 2020, and grew 0.9% compared with November. This brings the Emae for 2020 to -10%, one of its worst results ever. The Emae for 2020 is roughly in line with projections for GDP growth, with the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac) forecasting that Argentina’s 2020 GDP shrunk by 10.5%, the third consecutive year of negative growth in the country.
