In brief: Colombia focuses on social investment

*Colombia’s President Iván Duque has emphasised that making social investment is one of his government’s main priorities, insisting that it is fundamental to consolidating peace in the country. Speaking at a conference, Duque said that social investment in the territories that have historically suffered the worst violence linked to Colombia’s internal armed conflict and the reinsertion into society of demobilised former guerrillas are the main planks of the government’s peace promotion policies. Duque said that in the last three years his government has spent almost Col$5bn (US$1.4bn) on over 1,000 development projects in 170 municipalities afflicted by violence; and that it has invested Col$900bn in support of illicit crop substitution programmes benefiting families in 56 separate municipalities. Emphasising that these efforts will continue, Duque said that the government plans to spend over Col$10trn in its peace promotion programme this year.
