NICARAGUA: Opposition leaders announce new agreement

Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, the daughter of former president Violeta Chamorro (1990-1997), has become the latest presidential contender to sign up to a six-point agreement inked by four other leading opposition figures. The agreement commits to an electoral alliance which would field one presidential candidate in the 7 November general election in which President Daniel Ortega is seeking a further term for the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN). As well as ongoing difficulties facing the opposition - entrenched internal differences, and new laws which the opposition claims will muzzle it ahead of the vote [WR-21-06] - the agreement is conditional on there being “appropriate conditions” and “necessary electoral reforms” in place ahead of the vote, which are unlikely to take place.
