In brief: Chile’s industrial production dips in January

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the latest figures for its index of industrial production (IPI), which fell 2.4% year-on-year in January. This result was driven by a negative performance in the three sectors which make up the IPI: year-on-year, the INE recorded a 0.4% decrease in mining production; a -1.6% variation in the production of electricity, water, and gas; and a 4.4% drop in manufacturing. Restriction measures against the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic continue to be in place in parts of Chile, curtailing activities in some sectors. In seasonally-adjusted monthly terms, however, the January IPI grew 1.3% compared with December 2020.
