PERU: Military commander hit by corruption scandal

The head of the joint command of Peru’s armed forces has been implicated in a fuel theft ring. Coming hot on the heels of the ‘vacunagate’ scandal [WR-21-07] that has produced public outrage with the country’s political class, the new scandal threatens to erode confidence in another national institution. This will further fuel generalised disillusionment in Peru that could lead to calls for a sweeping reform of the state in April’s general election.
