In brief: Brazil’s industrial production remains positive

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures on the industrial sector, according to which industrial production grew 0.4% in January 2021 compared with December 2020. This is the ninth consecutive month of positive variation, after the slump in production with the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in March-April last year. Year-on-year, industrial production expanded 2% in January, while in the 12 months to January it has accumulated a negative result of -4.3%. Ibge’s research manager, André Macedo, notes the “maintenance of the positive behaviour of the industrial sector” in January, while adding that the rhythm of growth has decelerated compared with previous months.
