BRAZIL: The dangers of Bolsonaro’s pro-gun agenda

President Jair Bolsonaro’s support for easier and wider gun ownership is one of the issues on which he has remained exceptionally constant throughout his time in office. The effects of legislation passed in 2019, during the first year of his presidency, can already be observed in gun ownership numbers across Brazil. In February, Bolsonaro seized upon the start of a new legislative year, with newly elected congressional leaders more sympathetic to the government than their predecessors, to push more legislation that effectively dismantles the 2003 disarmament decree, which restricted access to firearms in Brazil. Concern is growing as to the adverse consequences of the president’s pro-gun agenda.
