The Escazú Agreement is the first regional environmental treaty in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the world’s first to include provisions on protecting human rights defenders in environmental matters. The regional agreement on access to information, public participation, and justice on environmental matters was signed in March 2018 in Escazú, Costa Rica, but to officially enter into force it needed to be ratified by 11 of the 24 signatory countries. On 22 January, both Mexico and Argentina ratified the agreement, pushing it over the threshold and leaving it poised to come into force on 22 April 2021 – Earth Day.
