In brief: Chile extends employment protections until June

* Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has announced that measures to protect and encourage employment in the context of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic will be extended until June. As well as extending the employment protection law and the protected parenting law, which allows parents with young children to request furlough, and relaxing requirements to access the ‘seguro de cesantía’ unemployment benefit, Piñera has announced an increase to the subsidies aiming to encourage employment. The ‘subsidio al empleo’ programme provides incentives to employers to both reincorporate furloughed employees and employ new workers, with the government funding up to 50% of a worker’s salary with a maximum of Cl$250,000 (US$341) for men, and 65% with a maximum of Cl$290,000 for women, people with disabilities, and young people (this is up from 60% or Cl$270,000 previously for the latter category). Piñera has announced these measures due to the extension of lockdowns or other restrictions in the face of the pandemic.
