MEXICO: Is El Mencho the new El Chapo?

A new set of gun battles with rival drug trafficking organisations (DTOs), a daring parade of home-made armoured cars, and the arrest of a key money-launderer have all kept the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and its leader, Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera Ramos, in the public eye. For some, the CJNG has now taken over from the Sinaloa DTO as the most powerful criminal organisation in Mexico, and El Mencho has replaced Sinaloa’s former leader, Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, currently in a US prison, as Mexico’s top gangster. But the real situation may be more complex.
