Brazil: In a press briefing on 4 March US State Department spokesperson
Ned Price was asked when US President
Joe Biden would speak to his Brazilian peer
Jair Bolsonaro. Price said
“I wouldn’t be in a position to preview any calls, any potential calls, on the part of the White House”. However, Price underlined the importance of the bilateral relationship saying
“I think what is true pertains to our partnership with Brazil, our two centuries of that partnership have been and remain today important to both our nations and to our hemisphere. Brazil and the US are the region’s largest democracies and the largest economies. We share a commitment to democratic values”. Price was also asked about what commitments the US expects from Brazil with regard to the Leaders’ Climate Summit which is being hosted by the US on 22 April. Price said that it is
“obviously for Brazil to decide and to announce themselves”. However, he said
“I think what is true is that the President, the Secretary of State, Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry, they’re focused on advancing action at home and around the world to reach net zero emissions globally by mid-century and to keep the limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius average temperature increase within reach…. We hope to expand on our track record of cooperation with Brazil and see Brazil take additional concrete steps towards combatting climate change and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.”End of preview - This article contains approximately 675 words.
