In brief: Banxico president bets on vaccines in Mexico

* The president of Mexico’s central bank (Banxico), Alejandro Díaz de León Carrillo, has welcomed the government’s plan to speed up vaccination against the coronavirus (Covid-19) as positive for the country’s economic recovery. Speaking to national daily El Universal, Díaz de León Carrillo said that if the aim of having distributed 80m vaccine doses by May is met, this will represent “an inflection point with regard to the current situation”, which would allow for the positive revision of growth and recovery forecasts. Díaz de León Carrillo recalled that Banxico currently expects Mexico’s economy to grow 4.8% this year and 3.3% in 2022, following the -8.2% contraction in GDP last year.
