In brief: Brazil sees record formal job creation in January

* Brazil’s economy ministry has released the latest figures from the national employment registry (Novo Caged), which show that 260,353 new jobs were created in the formal sector in January this year, the highest such figure for the month of January since current records began. Overall, there were 1.53m hirings and 1.27m dismissals in January, bringing the total stock of formal sector jobs to around 39.62m. Economy Minister Paulo Guedes has been keen to highlight the positive result as a sign of Brazil’s economic recovery, even in the midst of the worsening coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Citing the January monthly index for economic activity, released a day earlier by the central bank, Guedes said that “there are signs everywhere that the Brazilian economy is taking off again.”
