In brief: Mexico’s restaurant sector warns of pandemic impact

* The Cámara Nacional de la Industria de Restaurantes y Alimentos Condimentados (Canirac), Mexico’s restaurant association, has issued a statement urging agreements at different levels of government to reactivate the sector which has been affected by restrictions implemented to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). Canirac warns that in the last 12 months 120,000 restaurants across the country have closed definitively, resulting in the loss of 400,000 jobs. The Canirac statement calls on the government to provide fiscal incentives and financial backing to obtain loans to help the sector, as well as more generally to accelerate vaccination campaigns as part of efforts to “recover the 5.6m direct and indirect jobs generated by the industry prior to the pandemic”.
