BRAZIL: New health minister brings little hope of change

As the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic reaches new heights in Brazil, and with political pressure growing, President Jair Bolsonaro has moved to replace the current health minister, serving army general Eduardo Pazuello, with a doctor. Marcelo Queiroga will be the fourth health minister to serve under Bolsonaro, with the unenviable and arduous task of guiding Brazil’s Covid-19 policy as the country faces the worst of the pandemic yet. Despite Queiroga’s medical credentials, many in Brazil fear that his announced appointment is merely a gesture to placate critical allies and will not mark a much-needed change in the government’s Covid-19 response.
